DESKRIPSI MATA KULIAH

1. ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES: Course Design

English for specific purposes (ESP): Course Design is intended to provide the students undertaking Master Program with the conceptual knowledge about English used for specified learners with some specific vocational and educational purposes in mind, which is conducted in learners centered approach for establishing communicative competence. It is also aimed at providing the students with pedagogical and procedural knowledge of designing English for specific purposes.

2. APPLIED LINGUISTICS

Applied linguistics aimed at providing students with current issues pertaining to practical and problem-based discipline that is generally seen as serving a mediating function between (theoretical) linguistics (i.e., the academic discipline concerned with the study of language in general) and professions or practices whose activities involve language as a crucial concern. As linguistic theory and description cannot be deployed directly to solve practical real-life problems, applied linguistics serves a function as a mediating processor whereby the linguistic products (theory, insights, views, description, etc.) are reshaped and polished in a fashion suitable and applicable to the professions and practices requiring them. The course explores current issues related to applied ling technology’ that generates pedagogiccal linguistic matters, particularly in view of understanding solution-oriented concepts within the scope of SL/EFL teaching and learning/acquisition.

3. SOCIOLINGUISTICS AND LANGUAGE TEACHING

Sociolinguistics course is designed to equip prospective teachers with the knowledge about issues with regards to language and society as the speakers of languages. This course covers knowledge about language and society, language and social class, language and ethnic group, language and sex/gender, language and context, language and social interaction, dialect, creole, language maintenance, language death, accommodation theory, language planning and language policy. It also covers discussion on lingual data related to the topics.

4. BILINGUALISM AND BILINGUAL EDUCATION

The aim of this course is to give an overview of the most important aspects of bilingualism as a societal and individual phenomenon from a variety of points of view: those of sociolinguistics, the sociology of language, language contact, language acquisition, and psycholinguistics. Class sessions will focus on types and aspects of bilingualism regardless of the languages in question, first, and then continued with emphasis on discussing bilingual situations involving English and Bahasa Indonesia that lead to visible bilingual programs in school curriculum in Indonesia.

5. PRAGMATICS and Language Teaching

This course involves an analysis of people social behavior as well as how people produce and understand speech acts in many different types of conversation and monologues occur in various kinds of situations. The course is designed to cover five major topics: (1) the fundamentals of pragmatics, (2) contextualized language and the role of context, (3) the speech act theory, (4) the Gricean cooperative principle, and (5) politeness. These topics are discussed in the context of language teaching and learning.

6. DISCOURSE ANALYSIS AND LANGUAGE TEACHING

This course aims at providing students with opportunities to explore the theoretical or conceptual features as well as structures of different types of discourse in the context of language teaching. The course also covers different approaches for analyzing a discourse. The students go through lectures, group discussions and presentations so that they have good understanding towards the notion of discourse and discourse analysis and develop knowledge and skills in conducting discourse-based research.

7. ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODS

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the history and development of Teaching English as a Foreign Language as well as an experience of reviewing existing methods and strategies in English as a Foreign Language teaching and learning nowadays. The course also covers factors affecting success and failure in English Language Teaching in general and in the context of Indonesia in particular. Students are engaged in reviewing the most popular methods and strategies from theoretical and practical point of views. The concept of innovative teaching strategies is discussed along with simulation of innovative teaching strategies in different school levels. The students are not only expected to be knowledgeable in terms of methods and strategies but also critical as well as skillful in deciding on appropriate strategies for teaching in different contexts and different target learners.

8. LANGUAGE ASSESSMENTS

The major aim of this course is to equip students with latest trends in assessments in general and language assessment in particular. Students go through the process of examining as well as discussing different approaches in assessing students’ language achievement and behaviour. Students are also taught on how to design appropriate assessment instruments in the context of English as a Foreign Language teaching and learning.

9. EFL (ANALYSIS, DESIGN, PRACTICES)

This course aims at providing opportunities for the students majoring in English education to develop professional competencies and pedagogical skills in the area of English as a Foreign Language. The students go through lectures on developing curriculum, syllabus, materials and media for teaching. In groups, students are directed to produce an EFL instructional model that consists of syllabus, lesson plan, materials and media. This package is then implemented in the real classroom. The teaching practice integrates collaborative teaching, lesson study and reflective teaching.

10. FILSAFAT ILMU

Mata kuliah ini bertujuan untuk membekali mahasiswa dalam pengembangan kompetensi kepribadian berbasis pemahaman dan penerapan filsafat ilmu yang melandasi kajian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Topik dan substansi kajian perkuliahan mencakup: perkembangan filsafat dan ilmu pengetahuan, filsafat dan filsafat ilmu pengetahuan; kedudukan filsafat ilmu pengetahuan dalam sistem filsafat dan ruang lingkupnya; hakikat ilmu pengetahuan: ontologi, epistemologi, aksiologi kaitannya dengan kajian teknologi pembelajaran; dimensi dan struktur ilmu; metode keilmuan dan pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan dalam kajian penelitian Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris.

11. QUALITAIVE RESEARCH

This subject matter is intended to provide students with knowledge and competencies in terms of 1) the concepts of qualitative research, 2) characteristics of qualitative research, 3) Designs in qualitative research, 4) Data and instruments, 5) Subjects and Objects of the study, 6) techniques of data collections, 7) triangulation and 8) Data analysis, and how to write a research proposal.

12. QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

This research aims at providing students with knowledge and skills in terms of concepts of quantitative research, variables, hypothesis, review of literature, designs, data, sample and sampling techniques, procedures of data collections, and data analysis, and how to write a research proposal.

13. STATISTIK

Mata kuliah ini bertujuan menyajikan dasar-dasar analisis data kuantitatif serta penerapannya dalam penelitian kuantitatif. Topik yang disajikan dalam mata kuliah ini meliputi: analisis data kuantitatif (statistik), prosedur analisis data deskriptif melalui sajian dasar distribusi frekwensi, sajian visual grafik dan histogram, pengukuran tendensi sentral, variabilitas dan dispersi; pemilihan teknik analisis, pengukuran asosiasi dan korelasi, uji persyaratan analisis, pengujian hipotesis, dan konsep inferensi. Juga akan diperkenalkan beberapa teknik analisis yang lazim digunakan seperti: macam-macam uji-t, uji f, korelasi, Chi Kwadrad, analisis varians dan regresi.

14. LANDASAN IMU PENDIDIKAN DAN PEMBELAJARAN

Mata kuliah ini bertujuan memfasilitasi mahasiswa dalam pengembangan kompetensi pedagogi berbasis pemahaman tentang berbagai konsep dan teori yang menjadi landasan bagi ilmu pendidikan. Topik-topik perkuliahan mencakup: filsafat dan filsafat pendidikan, sosiologi dan sosiologi pendidikan, antropologi, psikologi sosial, dan psikologi pendidikan. Pembahasan juga mencakup pendidikan sebagai ilmu dan objek ilmu pendidikan, empat pilar pendukung pendidikan secara makro, pendidikan sepanjang hayat, pendidikan dan keterampilan abad 21, isu-isu pendidikan nasional.

15. SCIENTIFIC WRITING

This subject aims at providing students with guidelines and instructions for content, structures, and style of scientific reports which can take the forms of a field work report, a literature review of a research paper which all share a similar basic structure of Introduction, Method, Results, And, Discussion (IMRAD) style. At the end of the course, the student must be able to write an article following IMRAD style published for national or international publication.

16. SEMANTICS

This course aims at providing students with knowledge about aspects of meaning, kinds of meaning, lexical semantics which studies word meanings, sense and reference, word relations, and conceptual semantics which studies the cognitive structures of meaning.

17. FIELD STUDY

The course involves the activities of observing and collecting information about the process of teaching or other related academic experiences in a variety of ways. The activities can be in the forms of scientific excursion where students can visit places of academic interests as an attempt to develop something new that the students never experience before. At the end of the course, the students must submit a report about the activities conducted.

18. ADVANCED WRITING

The course involves activities of paraphrasing and summarizing, synthesizing and cross referencing, making direct and indirect quotation, reviewing, and referencing styles. At the end of the course, the students are able to make a critical review in the areas of language teaching and learning.

19. THESIS

This course aimed at providing students with opportunities to develop their thesis proposal (which has been approved by the supervisors through a seminar) into a thesis writing with close supervision and direction from the supervisors. The thesis report includes five chapters such as Introduction, Review of Related Literature, Methods, Findings and Discussion, and Conclusion and Suggestion. The format of the thesis must be in line with the thesis format decided by Postgraduate Program of Undiksha.
