Singaraja – Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha) Postgraduate Program held a doctoral promotion exam, on Monday (30/1/2023). The exam was attended by promovendus Putu Eka Suarmika from the Basic Education Doctoral Study Program.
Promovendus Eka Suarmika presented a dissertation entitled “Reconstruction of Disaster Risk Reduction Education: Model of Integration and Adaptation of Balinese Local Wisdom in Learning in Elementary Schools” in this exam.
One main aspect of reducing disaster risk for vulnerable groups, especially elementary school students, is strengthening the education sector. Education is an important part of disaster risk reduction to increase awareness and understanding of disasters and strengthen resilience and self-rescue skills for vulnerable groups. The current paradigm for disaster risk reduction (DRR) is community empowerment, where the community’s role is enhanced in dealing with disasters by utilizing local culture or wisdom. The local wisdom of Indonesian society is very varied and needs to be explored to be utilized in DRR learning. Specifically in Bali, DRR education did not run as expected due to four factors. Based on this background, promovendus conducted this research.
One of the findings obtained from the results of this research is the form and pattern of local wisdom of the Balinese traditional community in DRR, consisting of three elements including disaster resilient character, indigenous knowledge, and indigenous disaster mitigation. Through this research, it was also found that the conceptual model of DRR learning based on Balinese local wisdom is an alternative to increasing preparedness, mitigation, and post-disaster action for elementary school students in Bali.
Through the results of this research, Promovendus, who was born in Musi, succeeded in defending his dissertation before the board of examiners which led him to become the 57th doctorate born from the Undiksha Postgraduate Program.
